Common Language Description

An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), also known as an upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopic examination, is a diagnostic procedure that allows for the visualization of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and/or jejunum. This procedure is performed using a flexible, transoral endoscope, which is a thin, tube-like instrument equipped with a light and camera. The EGD can include the collection of specimens through techniques such as brushing or washing, which are essential for further analysis of any abnormalities detected during the examination. The procedure begins with the application of an anesthetic spray to numb the mouth and throat, facilitating the insertion of the endoscope. A hollow mouthpiece is used to keep the mouth open while the endoscope is carefully advanced through the esophagus and into the stomach and duodenum. Throughout the procedure, the physician inspects the mucosal surfaces for any signs of abnormalities, such as lesions, ulcers, or strictures. Additionally, directed submucosal injections may be performed to enhance visualization or treat specific conditions. The EGD is a critical tool in diagnosing various gastrointestinal disorders and is performed as a separate procedure when necessary.
