Common Language Description

An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a specialized upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopic procedure that allows for direct visualization and examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This procedure is particularly important for diagnosing and treating various gastrointestinal conditions. During an EGD, a flexible fiberoptic endoscope is utilized, which is a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera. The procedure begins with the administration of a local anesthetic spray to numb the mouth and throat, facilitating the insertion of the endoscope. A hollow mouthpiece is then placed in the patient's mouth to keep it open during the examination. As the patient swallows, the endoscope is carefully advanced through the esophagus, allowing the physician to inspect the lining for any abnormalities, such as inflammation, ulcers, or tumors. Once the endoscope reaches the stomach, air is insufflated to expand the stomach for better visualization of its various parts, including the cardia, fundus, greater and lesser curvature, and antrum. The procedure also includes the dilation of any gastric or duodenal strictures, which may be performed using a balloon or bougie dilator. This dilation process is crucial for relieving obstructions that can impede the passage of food and fluids. After the examination of the stomach, the endoscope is further advanced into the duodenum and/or jejunum, where the mucosal surfaces are also inspected for any signs of disease or abnormalities. Overall, the EGD with dilation is a comprehensive procedure that not only aids in diagnosis but also provides therapeutic interventions for various gastrointestinal disorders.
