The CPT® Code 44111 refers to the surgical procedure involving the excision of one or more lesions located in the small or large intestine. This procedure is characterized by the fact that it does not necessitate anastomosis, exteriorization, or fistulization, which are surgical techniques used to reconnect or divert the intestine. Instead, the focus is on the removal of lesions through multiple enterotomies, which are incisions made in the intestinal wall. During the procedure, a midline incision is created in the abdomen to access the affected segment of the intestine. The anti-mesenteric side, which is the side opposite the mesentery that supplies blood to the intestine, is then incised to allow for inspection of the mucosal lining. Once the lesions are identified, they are excised along with a margin of healthy tissue to ensure complete removal and are subsequently sent to a laboratory for histological analysis. This procedure is distinct from CPT® Code 44110, which involves a single enterotomy for the excision of lesions. In contrast, CPT® Code 44111 requires multiple enterotomies, allowing for the removal of lesions from various sites within the intestine without the need for more extensive surgical interventions.
