Common Language Description

Laminectomy, also known as lamina excision, is a surgical procedure aimed at alleviating back pain and addressing issues related to the spinal cord and nerve roots. This operation is particularly focused on relieving pressure that may be exerted on the spinal cord, spinal nerve roots, and/or cauda equina, which can lead to significant discomfort and neurological symptoms. The lamina is a critical component of the vertebra, forming the posterior part of the vertebral arch, and its removal is essential for accessing the underlying structures of the spine. During the procedure, a posterior skin incision is made over the affected area of the spine, allowing the surgeon to retract the overlying fat and muscle to expose the lamina. The excision of the lamina is performed to facilitate exploration of the spinal canal, where the surgeon can identify and address any abnormalities, such as adhesions or compressions affecting the spinal cord or nerve roots. This procedure can be conducted on one or two adjacent vertebral segments in the lumbar region, and it is important to note that any necessary stabilization of the spine through arthrodesis should be reported separately. Laminectomy is a critical intervention for conditions such as spinal stenosis, and it is categorized based on the specific region of the spine being treated, with distinct codes for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral laminectomies.
