Laminectomy for biopsy/excision of intraspinal neoplasm; extradural, thoracic

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 63276 involves a laminectomy performed specifically for the biopsy or excision of an intraspinal neoplasm located in the thoracic region and situated outside the dura mater, which is referred to as extradural. Intraspinal neoplasms can vary in nature, being benign, malignant, or of uncertain behavior, and this procedure is essential for obtaining a definitive diagnosis or for the removal of the tumor. The surgical approach begins with an incision in the skin over the thoracic area, where the tumor is identified. The incision is deepened to reach the spinous processes, allowing access to the underlying structures. The muscles are carefully retracted to expose the lamina and facet joint, and a bone drill is utilized to remove part or all of the lamina, thereby exposing the spinal cord. Once the tumor is located, the surgeon assesses its extent, ensuring it is confined to the extradural space. A tissue sample may be collected for pathology analysis, which is crucial for determining the tumor's characteristics. If the tumor is amenable to excision, it is meticulously dissected from the surrounding tissues, often with the aid of an operating microscope, to ensure complete removal while preserving adjacent structures. This procedure is critical for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in managing intraspinal neoplasms in the thoracic region.
