The CPT® Code 80301 refers to a laboratory test designed to detect a single drug class from Drug Class List A. This test is primarily performed on urine samples, although it can also be conducted on other biological specimens such as blood, saliva, hair, and sweat. Drug Class List A encompasses a variety of substances, including alcohol (ethanol), amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, buprenorphine, cocaine (and its metabolites), heroin (and its metabolites), methadone (including its metabolite EDDP), methamphetamine, methaqualone, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), opiates, oxycodone, phencyclidine, propoxyphene, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and tricyclic antidepressants. The test utilizes instrumented test systems, such as discrete multichannel chemistry analyzers, which employ immunoassay or enzyme assay methods to perform the analysis. These analyzers can be programmed to include or exclude specific tests based on clinical necessity, allowing for a tailored approach to drug screening. This method provides a cost-effective and accurate means for preliminary drug testing, delivering rapid qualitative results that can assist healthcare providers in making informed decisions regarding patient care.
