Common Language Description

An infectious agent antigen detection test is a diagnostic procedure that utilizes an immunoassay method with direct optical observation to identify the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This test is designed to provide rapid results, allowing for the qualitative detection of the virus in individuals who may be exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19. Symptoms associated with this illness can include cough, fever, chills, shortness of breath, dyspnea, chest pain, muscle aches, and fatigue. While many individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 may experience only mild to moderate respiratory symptoms and recover without the need for specialized medical treatment, there are cases where the illness can escalate to severe respiratory distress. In such severe instances, patients may experience significant difficulty breathing, chest pain, altered mental status, and a bluish tint to the skin, which may necessitate hospitalization and ventilatory support. The testing process involves collecting a respiratory sample, such as a sputum or nasal swab specimen, which is then placed in a tube containing an extraction reagent. This reagent serves to disrupt the virus particles present in the specimen, thereby exposing the viral nucleoproteins. Following this preparation, a test strip is inserted into the tube; if SARS-CoV-2 is present in the sample, a visible color change will occur on the test strip, indicating a positive result, alongside a control line that confirms the test's validity.
