Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 89264 refers to the process of sperm identification from testis tissue, which can be either fresh or cryopreserved. This procedure is essential in the field of reproductive medicine, particularly for individuals facing infertility issues. The identification process involves retrieving sperm from testicular tissue, which may be obtained through a separate aspiration or biopsy procedure. Once the tissue is collected, it is meticulously prepared for analysis in the embryology laboratory. The tissue is minced into very small segments and placed in a specialized medium known as yolk test buffer, which helps preserve the viability of the sperm during examination. In the lab, trained embryologists utilize a microscope to carefully inspect the tissue samples for the presence of viable sperm. This identification process can be quite labor-intensive and requires a high level of precision and expertise. After viable sperm are identified, they are subsequently prepared for use in assisted reproduction techniques, which may also be reported separately. In cases where frozen testis tissue is used, the tissue is thawed before undergoing the same identification process, ensuring that the sperm can be effectively utilized for reproductive purposes.
