Ophthalmic Scribe (Retina)

The ophthalmic scribe is responsible for proper documentation, patient interaction, and overall clinic flow coordination. This role requires good judgment to manage practice activities successfully.

The position involves periods of sitting, prolonged standing, bending, stooping, lifting, and stretching, along with hand-eye coordination and dexterity to operate computers and clinical instruments. Normal eyesight, hearing, and aptitude for accurate recording and communication are necessary.

Knowledge of multi-physician practice policies, HIPAA, Compliance, OSHA regulations, EMR systems, and clinical testing equipment is required. Strong initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making skills are essential to meet goals efficiently. Effective communication and organizational skills are needed to maintain clean and stocked exam rooms and assist with in-office procedures.

Candidates should have a High School diploma or Bachelor's Degree.

Preferred certifications include Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Medical Scribe (COS), or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), with COA certification required within 12 months of hire if not currently obtained. Certified Patient Service Specialist (CPSS) must be attained within 6 months of hire. Regular OSHA and HIPAA training and certification are mandatory.

Key duties include verifying patient information, documenting medical histories, performing patient work-ups, clinical chart documentation, maintaining patient confidentiality, assisting with laser surgeries and ocular injections, operating and maintaining equipment, and conducting eye examinations and diagnostic tests such as visual acuity, tonometry, fluorescein angiography, and OCT testing.

The role demands reliability, initiative, teamwork, and adherence to HIPAA, OSHA, and compliance regulations.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High School diploma or Bachelor's Degree
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Medical Scribe (COS), or Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred
  • Must obtain COA certification within 12 months if not already certified
  • Certified Patient Service Specialist (CPSS) required within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience in medical group practice & clinical ophthalmology preferred
  • Flexible hours including early mornings and late evenings
  • Ability to perform clinical tests and assist with in-office procedures
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, OSHA, and Compliance regulations
