Health Information Management Technician

The Health Information Management (HIM) Technician is responsible for loading all documents related to patients into the EMR system, while monitoring patient medical records to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines and quality initiatives. This role involves storing, retrieving, abstracting, analyzing, encoding, processing, transcribing, and releasing patient information, requiring attention to detail and superior organization skills in a fast-paced clinical environment. The technician must follow established protocols to comply with federal and state legal requirements and work under the direction of the Site Operations Manager.

Job responsibilities include scanning patient documents into the EMR, organizing patient records upon request, preparing and releasing records to authorized parties, assisting patients with release of information requests, answering inquiries regarding medical records, processing payments for records, managing mail, participating in meetings, training new staff, handling legal record requests, ensuring contracted record destruction compliance, managing records purging per policy, interacting with medical personnel during onsite visits, and serving as a resource for staff and patients.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school graduate required.
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in medical office, clinic, or hospital preferred.
  • Experience with EMR/EHR systems preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, medical terminology, HIPAA laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of medical charts, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, ICD-10 and CPT coding.
  • Professional and positive demeanor.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and deliver optimal customer service.
  • Strong leadership, critical thinking, and prioritization skills.
  • Effective communication and documentation skills.
