The Dental Assistant must be a graduate of a school of allied health/technical program (or equivalent) and hold current certification and registration as a Dental Assistant. Training includes dental radiology and radiology safety. Certified in CPR per American Red Cross or American Heart Association with at least six months experience, though additional experience is desired. Bilingual skills and clinical correctional setting experience preferred but not required.
Responsibilities include assisting Dental Officers in all specialties (restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics), patient preparation and escorting, instrument and material preparation, assisting in procedures and emergencies, dental health education, charting including scanning, periodontal surgery prep, vital signs assessment, surgical pack preparation, placing temporary fillings and rubber dams, dental restorations, tooth shade selection, conducting basic dental sick call, taking vital signs as needed by Health Services.
Radiology duties: taking and processing diagnostic-quality radiographs (periapical, occlusal, cephalometric, panoramic), positioning patients and sensors, minimizing radiation exposure, performing quality assurance, maintaining infection control.
Lab and prosthetics: fabricating and repairing dental prostheses under supervision, making impressions and casts.
Infection control and sterilization: cleaning, sharpening, sterilizing instruments, maintaining infection control, sterilizing biological waste, preparing treatment rooms.
Equipment and supply management: maintaining equipment and supplies, conducting daily inspections, minor repairs, logging counts and reporting discrepancies.
Patient records and documentation: documenting treatments and vital signs directly, maintaining electronic and paper records, managing dental logs, scheduling.
Medication and preventive care: applying prescribed medication, using dental instruments for prophylaxis.
Schedule: Full-time, contract; competitive hourly pay $28-$32 commensurate with experience.
