This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Jonathan M. Wainwright VA Medical Center. Release of Information (ROI) technicians disclose health information in accordance with all laws and regulations governing authorization and disclosure of health information.
Responsibilities include evaluating authorization forms, screening information requests for urgency, applying laws and regulations such as the Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, HIPAA, and related statutes, processing requests via ROI software, reviewing health records to identify information to be released, composing responses, and resolving conflicting information. Provides advisory and technical assistance regarding release of information to patients and staff.
The role requires evaluating the validity of requests and ensuring proper authorization before release of confidential health information. Work involves reviewing paper and electronic health records and communicating information in compliance with legal standards.
Work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm, with telework available on an ad-hoc basis.
The position is full-time, permanent, excepted service with GS-6 level classification.

Qualifications include: one year of experience with medical terminology and health records (with at least six months relevant to ROI technician duties), or an associate's degree in health information technology/management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of laws and regulations governing health information release, ability to apply health record documentation guidelines, and skills to process requests accurately and efficiently are required.
Candidates must complete a satisfactory trial period after appointment.
