The Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist 3 oversees the accurate release of information within the Health Information Management Department. Responsibilities include processing records requests from patients, providers, attorneys, governmental agencies, and others, responding to subpoenas complying with state and federal privacy laws, ensuring requests meet HIPAA compliance, and returning non-compliant requests. The role provides notary services for hospital record releases and assists walk-in customers. Additional duties include preparing records for Peer Review, submitting reports to the Death and Suicide Registry, managing departmental supplies, and maintaining meeting minutes. This position requires performing duties of HIM Specialist 1 and 2.
- Associates degree or two years of relevant experience required
- Medical Terminology course to be completed after hire
- RHIT or RHIA certification preferred
- One year experience in Health Information Department preferred
- Knowledge of HIPAA and state/federal release of information laws
- General office skills: typing (40 wpm), telephone, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
- Effective and professional communication skills
- Attention to detail and ability to read and understand patient records
- Critical thinking, decision-making, and ability to work independently
- Notary public certification required or must obtain within six months of hire
