The Trauma Registrar is responsible for the collection and abstraction of data elements for state and national trauma databases. This role supports State of Ohio and American College of Surgeons trauma registry requirements and assigns diagnosis and procedure codes for research and compliance with state and federal regulations.
The position involves identifying registry cases, abstracting data from multiple sources such as the electronic medical record, prehospital databases, autopsy reports, and other supporting documentation. The Trauma Registrar also performs daily chart review, data entry, data validation, and assists with performance improvement activities.
Required certifications and credentials
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Or equivalent education and experience
- Must complete and pass AIS Coding by AAAM within 12 months of hire
- Must complete and pass an ICD-10 trauma-specific coding course within 12 months of hire
- Must maintain 90% accuracy on ongoing data validation after 12 months of employment
Education
- Completion of ICD-10 coding courses
- Completion of college-level Anatomy/Physiology courses
- Completion of college-level Medical Terminology courses
- Associate degree preferred in a related field or medical records coding from an accredited program
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience working directly with medical records and computers
- 1 to 2 years of experience in registry data abstraction/coding
Skills
- Current knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding principles
- Proficiency with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and email
- Strong abstracting, data entry, and verification skills
- Medical terminology and acronym knowledge related to diagnoses, procedures, complications, and comorbidities
- Attention to detail, critical thinking, conflict resolution, active listening, and relationship building
- Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and in a fast-paced environment
