Trauma Registrar Coding Specialist

The Trauma Registrar is responsible for collecting and abstracting data elements for state and national trauma databases. This role supports Ohio state reporting requirements and American College of Surgeons trauma registry standards, and assigns diagnosis and procedure codes for research and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Identifying cases for inclusion in the trauma registry
  • Abstracting data from the electronic medical record, prehospital databases, autopsy reports, and other sources
  • Assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes
  • Assigning and verifying AIS codes for severity of illness and probability of survival
  • Performing daily chart review and data entry into the Trauma Registry
  • Ensuring accurate and timely reporting to the organization and regulatory agencies
  • Supporting performance improvement activities
Requirements & Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • One or more of the following: RHIT, RHIA, CPC, CCS, or equivalent education and experience
  • Completion of ICD-10 coding courses
  • Completion of college-level Anatomy/Physiology courses
  • Completion of college-level Medical Terminology courses
  • Must complete and pass AIS Coding by AAAM within 12 months of hire
  • Must complete and pass the ICD-10 trauma-specific coding course within 12 months of hire
  • Maintain ongoing data validation accuracy of 90% or higher after 12 months of employment
  • At least 1 year of experience working directly with medical records and computers
  • 1 to 2 years of experience in registry data abstraction/coding
  • Current knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding principles
  • Proficiency with MS Office, including Word, Excel, email, spreadsheets, and databases
  • Strong attention to detail, critical thinking, conflict resolution, active listening, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and in a fast-paced environment
  • Weekend, holiday, and on-call rotation required per department policy
