Trauma Data I Specialist, Trauma Center

The Trauma Data I Specialist performs Trauma, Burn, and Acute Care Surgery registry work, including data collection, data entry, data retrieval, quality and integrity checks, data analysis, and statistical reporting to support research, performance improvement, injury prevention, education, billing, and outcome measurement.

The role involves obtaining, abstracting, and reporting concurrent and retrospective patient data for trauma-related patients. It also includes maintaining patient databases using AIS injury coding and ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in healthcare, technology, education, health information, or a related field.
  • Completion within 12 months of hire of:
    • An Abbreviated Injury Scaling (AIS) Coding course from AAAM.
    • The American Trauma Society Registrar Course or a state-equivalent course approved by the American College of Surgeons, including abstraction, data management, report analysis, data validation, and HIPAA.
  • Preferred certifications include one or more of the following:
    • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry (CSTR)
    • Certified Abbreviated Injury Severity Scale Specialist (CAISS)
    • Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC)
    • Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
    • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
    • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
    • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Minimum 1-2 years of equivalent experience required; 3-5 years preferred.
  • Two or more years of trauma registry experience may be accepted in lieu of an associate degree.
