The Trauma Registrar is responsible for collecting and abstracting data elements for inclusion in state and national trauma databases. This role supports Southside Medical Center’s requirements for Level III Trauma Center verification and maintenance of a trauma registry database in accordance with Commonwealth of Virginia and American College of Surgeons standards.
The position involves identifying trauma cases, abstracting clinical data from multiple sources, assigning diagnosis, procedure, and injury severity codes, and maintaining accurate and timely registry records. The Trauma Registrar also supports quality reporting and performance improvement activities.
Required Qualifications
- One year of work experience in registry data abstraction/coding, or two years of experience in medical data abstraction/coding
- Proficiency with MS Office software, including email, Word, and Excel
- Completion of ICD-10 coding courses
- Completion of college-level Anatomy/Physiology courses
- Completion of college-level Medical Terminology courses
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in trauma or surgery registry abstraction/coding
- Experience with Windows-based software, databases, and spreadsheet applications
- Experience with state and national regulatory requirements for abstracting
- Knowledge of medical terminology and acronyms related to diagnoses, procedures, complications, and comorbid conditions
- Strong data entry, verification, and quality control skills
- Associate degree in a field including medical terminology and Anatomy/Physiology, or in medical records coding from an accredited program
Ongoing Employment Requirements
- Maintain 95% data validation accuracy after 12 months of employment
- Obtain CAISS certification within 24 months of hire
