The HIM Specialist I supports day-to-day Health Information Management operations across multiple hospitals and functional areas, including data integrity, document imaging, birth registry, deficiency management, and release of information.
This role helps ensure medical records are accurate, complete, and timely while maintaining privacy and compliance with HIPAA, HITECH, and hospital policies. Key duties include processing and routing documents, scanning and indexing records, validating patient and encounter information, managing deficiency work queues, and assisting with release of information requests.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Windows
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
- Medical terminology preferred or within 1 year of hire
- 1 year of experience in HIM, revenue management/revenue cycle, or a healthcare field preferred
- Completion of a Health Information Management, Healthcare Informatics, Health Information Technology, or Health Service Administration degree program may substitute for 1 year of experience
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to read and comprehend medical records documentation
- Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
