Release of Information Specialist

Join UnityPoint Health as a Release of Information Specialist in the Health Information Management department.

In this role, you will receive, validate, document, and respond to requests for information contained in legal medical records. You will handle inquiries from healthcare organizations, attorneys, insurance companies, patients, physicians, and other third parties in a timely and efficient manner.

The position is onsite, with applicants required to reside in the Quad Cities, Des Moines, IA, or Cedar Rapids, IA. Some travel is required. Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparing medical information in accordance with facility policies and state and federal laws
  • Logging and fulfilling release requests or routing them to the approved vendor
  • Completing invoices and following up on payments
  • Validating HIPAA-compliant authorizations and requests
  • Collaborating with staff to resolve issues related to documents, MPI, and HIPAA disclosures
  • Prioritizing requests within required timeframes
  • Performing quality checks for completeness, accuracy, confidentiality, and proper invoicing
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all patient and facility information
  • Answering phone calls and assisting with patient walk-in requests
  • Retrieving patient information from computer systems and media
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; associate degree in Health Science preferred
  • Release of Information experience required
  • Previous experience in a hospital or clinic setting preferred
  • Experience with electronic health records, related office work, or customer service preferred
  • RHIT, RHIA, or CRIS certification preferred
  • Valid driver's license required
