Release of Information Specialist, Senior

The Release of Information Senior receives, analyzes, and processes incoming requests for distribution of patient medical records in a timely manner. The role verifies request validity, confirms proper authorization to release information, and securely sends records to healthcare providers or other entities to support the provision and coordination of care.

This position handles requests received in person, by telephone, email, mail, or fax; enters requests into ROI systems; and responds to questions about forms and processes. The role protects patient privacy and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and federal and state laws.

The position also provides coverage across all Release of Information functions, including patient-facing locations, and processes PACS radiology imaging requests. In addition, it supports training, cross-training, research, problem-solving, escalation management, workflow monitoring, scheduling coordination, and interdepartmental communication.

This role works independently with minimal supervision and serves as a liaison between the ROI team and internal departments.

Requirements & Qualifications

Experience and education

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in Release of Information

Required knowledge and skills

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Experience in Release of Information, medical records, or Health Information Management
  • HIPAA knowledge
  • Proficiency with Windows, Microsoft Office, and Outlook
  • Strong data entry skills
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task while handling a high volume of incoming calls
  • Ability to meet deadlines and shift priorities
  • Ability to follow established procedures
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to research, collect, interpret, and analyze data
  • Trained in de-escalation techniques

Preferred experience

  • Experience with Cerner applications
  • Experience with PACS software
