Medical Coding and Billing Assistant I

Under the direction of Yale Medicine Administration (YMA) Coding and Billing, the Coding and Billing Assistant I is responsible for reviewing all aspects of charge submission for patient clinical services based on coding, documentation review, quality assurance, and compliance guidelines.

The role reviews charge submissions for compliance with established coding guidelines, YMA policies and protocols, third-party reimbursement policies, federal payer regulations, and HIPAA guidelines. It also supports accurate, timely billing of professional charges while maintaining productivity targets and lag day expectations.

May review and analyze documented medical services to verify accurate documentation and coding of services performed.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • General/intermediate knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, modifier coding, medical terminology, human anatomy, and digital coding resources/software
  • Ability to analyze and interpret evaluation and management documentation guidelines and applicable procedure coding guidelines
  • Experience with electronic health record systems, practice applications, data entry, and web-based applications
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Knowledge of federal payer regulations, third-party payers, HIPAA rules, and reimbursement policies and procedures
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Preferred: Epic experience, academic medical environment or large multi-specialty practice experience, CPC certification
  • Required: CPC-A certification through AAPC; must maintain certification and achieve CPC status within 2 years
  • Required education/experience: four years of related work experience with high school education, or two years of related work experience with an associate degree, or equivalent combination
