Coding Auditor

Role overview

Remote coding auditor position within the HIM Coding Documentation department. This role conducts independent audits of professional-fee coding records across ambulatory specialties, reviews coding accuracy and documentation support, and helps improve billing integrity and compliance.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform structured audits of professional-fee coding records across multiple ambulatory specialties.
  • Audit CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, E/M services, medical necessity, and provider documentation.
  • Analyze audit findings and provide clear reports to practice managers, coding leadership, and clinical stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver education for physicians, APPs, coders, billers, and practice leaders.
  • Identify coding trends and uncaptured revenue opportunities.
  • Partner with practice teams to create corrective action plans.
  • Assist in refining auditing frameworks and targeting high-risk compliance areas.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED with 2 years of experience, associate degree, or technical degree required.
  • 1 year of experience required.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional fee coding and auditing experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of coding compliance, documentation review, revenue cycle processes, and billing/coding best practices.
  • Coding audit experience strongly preferred over production coding experience.
  • Surgical coding and physician partnership experience, including surgical authorizations.
  • Ability to support physician education, documentation improvement, and provider engagement initiatives.
  • Active CPC or CCS-P certification required upon hire.
