Medical Director

The Medical Director provides medical leadership, services, direction, and coordination for the delivery of care to clients based on their medical and psycho-social needs. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating the medical practice delivery model in alignment with program goals and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and city regulations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing scheduled patient visits and reviewing daily scheduling with the supervisor
  • Participating in planning, development, and organization of medical services
  • Developing and reviewing medical policies related to patient care
  • Conducting physical examinations upon admission and on an annual, regular, or as-needed basis
  • Reviewing intake documentation, initial needs assessments, and treatment plans
  • Participating in regulatory agency site visit preparation
  • Providing physician consultation and emergency coverage when needed
  • Ordering, evaluating, adjusting, and terminating medication dosages as appropriate
  • Reviewing incidents related to patient care and implementing corrective actions
  • Participating in interdisciplinary care planning and case conferencing
  • Providing medical assessment, consultation, treatment, and referrals
  • Supporting crisis intervention for medical and psychiatric emergencies
  • Assessing hospitalization needs and coordinating with primary care and other providers
  • Reporting recommendations to the Program Director
  • Supporting administrative planning, budget activities, and quality care delivery
Requirements & Qualifications

Active and unrestricted physician licensure in New York

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
  • Completion of three years of residency and fellowship, if applicable
  • One year of related practice experience in substance use disorder
  • Board certification in Addiction Medicine required within 4 years of hire
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) application and/or maintenance
  • Active and unrestricted DEA registration
  • Active and unrestricted DATA 2000 Waiver (buprenorphine)
  • NYS-mandated Infection Control certification
  • Current Basic Life Support certification
  • Knowledge of ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding
  • Current knowledge of health center licensing, legal/regulatory, administrative, policy, protocols, and clinical issues
  • Previous leadership experience in a culturally and linguistically diverse setting preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred
  • Strong communication skills and knowledge of medications, side effects, contraindications, and best practices
