Medical Assistant - Family Care

Position Overview

The Medical Assistant supports daily patient flow for assigned physicians and uses triage skills to gather information that helps designated staff make appropriate patient health assessments and anticipate physician needs.

Department Summary

Medical Assistants work across St. Charles Health System in multiple specialties, collaborating with physicians and non-clinical staff to provide comprehensive and compassionate care.

Essential Functions

  • Escort patients to exam rooms and prepare them for physician assessment.
  • Record and maintain patient medical data in the medical chart.
  • Assist physicians with phone requests from patients, medical professionals, and institutions.
  • Perform physician-requested ancillary and surgical patient procedures, excluding IV medication administration.
  • Maintain equipment, instruments, and supply inventory levels.
  • Support the organization’s vision, mission, values, and Lean principles.
  • Help maintain a safe environment for caregivers, patients, and guests.
  • Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, HIPAA compliance, and ethical conduct.
  • Deliver timely, efficient, and accurate customer service and patient care.
  • Perform additional duties of similar complexity as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

Licensure and Certification

  • Current MA certification from AMT, NCCT, AAMA, NAHP, or NHA, or current Oregon licensure as an intermediate or paramedic level EMT, LPN, RN, or Athletic Trainer.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification.

Experience

  • Basic knowledge of ICD-10, CM/CPT/HCPCS coding conventions and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of medical practice management information systems.
  • Basic knowledge of physician office documentation standards.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and meet HIPAA requirements.
  • One year of Medical Assisting experience required for some candidates.
  • Two years of Medical Assisting experience preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel to business functions, trainings, meetings, and other worksites.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Must meet the physical requirements of the position.
