The Miami VA Healthcare System's Health Administration Service is hiring an experienced Medical Records Technician (Release of Information) to review and process requests for patient protected health information (PHI).
This role supports Veterans and third-party requestors by validating requests, releasing authorized information, maintaining disclosure accounting, and ensuring compliance with privacy and health information laws and regulations. The position also provides customer service and technical assistance related to release of information processes.
Basic qualifications
- U.S. citizenship
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- One year of creditable experience involving medical terminology and general understanding of health records, with at least six months providing the KSAs needed for MRT (ROI) work; or
- An associate's degree in health information technology/management or a related field with required coursework; or
- A qualifying combination of education and experience
GS-06 specialized experience
- One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 level performing ROI-related work
- Knowledge of laws and regulations related to disclosure of health information, including HIPAA, Privacy Act, FOIA, and 38 U.S.C. § 7332
- Ability to navigate paper and electronic health records to locate and disclose protected health information
- Ability to apply privacy and release of information policies and procedures
- Ability to research and resolve difficult questions related to release of health information
