HIMS Specialist

Mayo Clinic

Analyzes patient information to ensure compliance with standards established by Federal/State, Joint Commission, and CMS regulations. Coordinates with clinicians to ensure documentation contains all required elements and is completed in a timely manner. Adheres to institutional policies regarding health care documentation.

Works independently and collaboratively across the enterprise with minimal supervision. Uses independent analytical and critical thinking skills. Adheres to minimum necessary access guidelines and state/federal privacy and confidentiality rules related to protected health information. Leverages technology to support patients and the practice.

Communicates professionally through electronic, written, and verbal methods. Provides courteous, professional, and confidential support to patients, care providers, allied health staff, attorneys, insurance companies, government audits, and others.

Requirements & Qualifications

Associate of Science degree in a healthcare-related discipline required.

Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology preferred. Students actively completing the last semester of an HIT associate degree program may be considered, with successful completion required within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge of medical records format and content required. Ability to work in a fast-paced, constantly changing, production-oriented environment with a focus on quality.

Excellent customer service skills and strong verbal and written communication skills required.

Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-technology environment and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.

Keyboarding skills and intermediate typing/computer skills required.

RHIT or RHIA preferred.
