The CPT® Code 19340 refers to the procedure of inserting a breast implant on the same day as a mastectomy, commonly known as immediate breast reconstruction. This procedure is performed during the same surgical session as the mastectomy, allowing for a seamless transition from the removal of breast tissue to the placement of an implant. The surgeon utilizes the existing incisions made during the mastectomy to minimize additional scarring and trauma to the surrounding tissues. A pocket is created behind the remaining muscle, breast tissue, fat, and skin to accommodate the implant. The selected breast implant is then carefully positioned within this pocket, ensuring it is centered behind the nipple for optimal aesthetic results. After the implant is placed, the overlying tissues are meticulously shaped and contoured to provide a natural appearance. The surgical site is then closed in layers to promote healing and reduce the risk of complications. In some cases, drainage tubes may be inserted to prevent fluid accumulation, and a compression-type dressing is applied to support the area postoperatively. This procedure is significant as it allows for immediate restoration of breast volume and shape, which can be an important aspect of the patient's emotional and psychological recovery following a mastectomy.
