Nipple/areola reconstruction is a surgical procedure aimed at restoring the appearance of the nipple and areola, which may be necessary due to various medical conditions, including breast cancer or congenital deformities. This reconstructive surgery involves the careful harvesting of a skin graft, typically taken from areas such as the inner thigh, ear, or vulva, which are chosen for their skin texture and color that can closely match the breast area. The procedure begins with the excision of tissue from the existing nipple or the procurement of an additional graft from the donor site. Following the harvesting of the graft, the donor site is meticulously closed with sutures to promote healing and minimize scarring. The surgeon then creates a circular incision over the area designated for the areola, excising a thin layer of skin to prepare for the graft placement. The harvested skin graft is then positioned and sutured into place to form the new areola. To complete the reconstruction, a small circular incision is made at the center of the newly formed areola, where a second graft is placed to create the nipple. This graft is also secured with sutures, ensuring that the reconstructed nipple and areola are aesthetically pleasing and functional.
