Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 22315 refers to the closed treatment of vertebral fractures and/or dislocations that necessitate the use of casting or bracing, which may involve manipulation or traction. This procedure is specifically designed for cases where one or more vertebral body fractures occur, and it is characterized by the application of non-surgical techniques to stabilize the spine. The vertebral body, which is the robust, disc-shaped anterior section of the vertebra, serves as the primary weight-bearing component of the spine. Common types of fractures treated under this code include simple compression fractures, which occur when the vertebra collapses, and burst fractures, where the vertebra is shattered into multiple pieces. During the procedure, a thorough neurovascular examination is conducted to confirm that the nerves and blood vessels surrounding the injury site remain intact, ensuring that there are no complications that could affect the patient's recovery. Unlike CPT® Code 22310, which involves treatment without the need for manipulation of fracture fragments, CPT® Code 22315 encompasses cases where minimally displaced vertebral fractures or dislocations are treated through manual reduction techniques. This involves realigning the fractured or dislocated vertebrae into their proper anatomical position, either through direct manipulation or by applying traction. The application of traction involves exerting a longitudinal force along the spine's axis to relieve pressure on the fracture. After the reduction is achieved, follow-up radiographs are obtained to verify that the vertebrae are correctly aligned before immobilization is performed using a brace or cast to support the healing process.
