A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that involves the use of a flexible endoscope to examine the lower part of the colon, specifically the rectum and sigmoid colon. This procedure is performed to identify any abnormalities within the mucosal surfaces of the colon, such as ulcerations, varices, bleeding sites, lesions, strictures, or other pathological conditions. During the procedure, the sigmoidoscope is inserted into the anus and carefully advanced through the rectum into the sigmoid colon. Air insufflation is utilized to expand the colon and separate the mucosal folds, allowing for a clearer view of the internal structures. The physician inspects the mucosal surfaces for any irregularities and notes any findings. In addition to visual inspection, the procedure may include the collection of specimens for further analysis. This can be done through brushing or washing techniques. A brush can be introduced through the endoscope to obtain cytology samples, which are then sent for laboratory analysis. Alternatively, sterile water may be introduced to wash the mucosal lining, and the fluid is subsequently aspirated to collect cell samples. If any suspicious areas are identified during the examination, the procedure may be followed by biopsy, which involves taking tissue samples for further evaluation. The flexible sigmoidoscopy is classified as a separate procedure when performed solely for diagnostic purposes, as indicated by the CPT® code 45330.
