A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that allows for the examination of the lower part of the colon, specifically the sigmoid colon and a portion of the descending colon. This procedure is performed using a flexible sigmoidoscope, which is a long, thin tube equipped with a light and camera. The sigmoidoscope is inserted into the anus and advanced through the rectum, utilizing air insufflation to expand the colon and separate the mucosal folds. This technique enhances visualization of the colon's interior, allowing the physician to identify any abnormalities or conditions present. In conjunction with the sigmoidoscopy, band ligation is employed as a treatment method for internal hemorrhoids. During this process, the physician locates the hemorrhoid(s) and uses forceps to grasp them, pulling them through a ligature device. A rubber band is then applied to the base of the hemorrhoid to cut off its blood supply, effectively treating the condition. This procedure may involve the application of multiple bands to ensure effective treatment. The entire process is designed to provide both diagnostic insight and therapeutic intervention for patients suffering from hemorrhoids.
