Common Language Description

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a medical procedure that involves the use of a flexible tube equipped with a light and camera, known as a sigmoidoscope, to examine the lower part of the colon, specifically the rectum and sigmoid colon. This procedure is performed to identify any abnormalities within these areas, such as polyps, tumors, or signs of inflammation. During the procedure, air is insufflated into the colon to expand it, allowing for a clearer view of the mucosal surfaces. In cases where a foreign body is present, the sigmoidoscope is advanced to the location of the foreign object. The removal of foreign bodies can be accomplished using various techniques, including the use of a balloon catheter or forceps. A balloon catheter is particularly useful for smooth-edged foreign bodies; it is inserted beyond the object, inflated, and then withdrawn to extract the foreign body. For impacted foreign bodies, forceps are utilized to grasp and remove the object directly through the endoscope. After the removal process, the sigmoidoscope is reintroduced to thoroughly inspect the rectum and sigmoid colon for any potential perforations or injuries that may have occurred during the procedure.
