Cystourethroscopy with direct vision internal urethrotomy

Common Language Description

CPT® Code 52276 refers to a medical procedure known as cystourethroscopy with direct vision internal urethrotomy. This procedure is specifically designed to address internal urethral strictures, which are narrowings of the urethra that can impede the flow of urine. The process begins with cystourethroscopy, a diagnostic technique that allows healthcare providers to visualize the interior of the bladder and urethra. This visualization is crucial for identifying the precise location and extent of the urethral stricture. During the procedure, the urethral orifice is first cleansed with an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. A cystoscope, which can be either rigid or flexible, is then carefully introduced through the urethra and into the bladder. Once inside, the bladder is thoroughly inspected, and the ureteral orifices are identified and examined for any abnormalities. After this initial inspection, the cystoscope is slowly withdrawn to locate the area of stricture. At this point, a cold knife incision is made at the 12 o'clock position, or multiple radial incisions may be performed at the site of the stricture to alleviate the narrowing. If additional strictures are detected, the procedure may be repeated to ensure all affected areas are treated. Following the incisions, the urethra is re-examined using the cystoscope to confirm the effectiveness of the procedure. Finally, the cystoscope is removed, and a Foley catheter is placed through the urethra into the bladder. This catheter serves to maintain the diameter of the treated areas, promoting healing and preventing re-narrowing. It is important to note that CPT® Code 52276 is specifically for direct vision urethrotomy, distinguishing it from other related codes such as 52270 for incision of a female urethral stricture and 52275 for a male urethral stricture.
