The CPT® Code 83499 refers to a laboratory test that measures the level of 20-alpha (20α) hydroxyprogesterone, which is an inactive metabolite of the hormone progesterone. Progesterone plays a crucial role in reproductive health, particularly in conception and the maintenance of pregnancy. The conversion of progesterone to 20α-hydroxyprogesterone is facilitated by the enzyme 20 hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (20α-HSD). Monitoring the levels of 20α-hydroxyprogesterone is important because an imbalance between active progesterone and its inactive form can lead to various reproductive issues, including infertility, miscarriage, and preterm labor. To perform this test, a blood sample is collected through a procedure known as venipuncture, which is separately reportable. The serum obtained from the blood sample is then analyzed using a radioimmune assay, a sensitive technique that allows for the precise measurement of hormone levels in the bloodstream.
