Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 88154 refers to a specific cytopathology procedure involving the examination of cervical or vaginal slides. This procedure is commonly known as a Papanicolaou (PAP) smear, which is a critical test used to screen for cervical cancer and other abnormalities in the cervical cells. The test is designed to identify any changes in the cell structure that may indicate the presence of disease, such as cervical dysplasia or in situ carcinoma. Early detection through this screening allows for timely monitoring and treatment, potentially preventing the progression to invasive malignant disease.

During the procedure, cells are collected from the endocervix using a specialized instrument, such as a brush or stick. The collected specimen is then smeared onto a glass slide, fixed with a spray or immersion solution, and subsequently covered with a coverslip. This prepared slide is sent to a cytology laboratory, where it undergoes staining to enhance visibility under a microscope. A trained technician screens the slide for any abnormalities, identifying abnormal cells or clusters that may require further investigation.

The process outlined in CPT® Code 88154 includes both manual screening and computer-assisted rescreening. Initially, a technician performs a manual screening of the slide under the supervision of a physician. Following this, the slide is subjected to computer-assisted rescreening, where the computer is programmed to detect suspicious single cells and abnormal cell structures. The technician then reviews the findings generated by the computer, compares them with the manual screening results, and interprets both sets of findings. If any abnormalities are detected, the results may be referred to a pathologist for further review and interpretation, with findings communicated to the treating physician for appropriate follow-up actions.
