Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 31627 refers to a specialized bronchoscopy procedure that incorporates advanced technology for enhanced precision. This procedure, known as navigated bronchoscopy, utilizes a computer-assisted, image-guided navigation system to facilitate the primary bronchoscopy. During this procedure, either a rigid or flexible bronchoscope is inserted through the patient's nose or mouth and carefully advanced into the oropharynx, which is the part of the throat located behind the mouth. The use of fluoroscopic guidance may be employed as necessary to assist in visualizing the airway structures. The examination begins with the oropharynx, followed by a detailed visualization of the vocal cords. The bronchoscope is then advanced into the trachea, allowing for a thorough examination of this central airway before proceeding into the right and left mainstem bronchi. Any abnormalities encountered during this examination are meticulously noted for further evaluation. In cases where a rigid bronchoscope is utilized, a telescope or flexible bronchoscope may be inserted through it to provide a clearer view of the distal segments of each mainstem bronchus. The integration of the navigation system is crucial, as it employs computer data and images to track the bronchoscope's position and orientation in relation to any identified lesions or defects within the airways. This technology registers anatomical landmarks, thereby enhancing the physician's ability to perform the primary bronchoscopy with greater accuracy and precision.
