Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 92506 refers to the evaluation of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing conducted by a speech-language pathologist. This comprehensive evaluation aims to identify any existing speech or language disorders in patients. A speech disorder is characterized by difficulties in the production of sounds, which can manifest in various ways, such as articulation issues, fluency problems, or resonance disorders. Articulation disorders involve challenges in producing sounds correctly, leading to misunderstandings in communication. Fluency disorders, such as stuttering, affect the flow of speech, while resonance disorders pertain to abnormalities in pitch, volume, or voice quality. On the other hand, language disorders can be classified into receptive and expressive categories. Receptive disorders involve difficulties in understanding or processing language, whereas expressive disorders are characterized by challenges in formulating words or a limited vocabulary. During the evaluation process, the speech-language pathologist conducts a thorough screening of all aspects of speech production, as well as both receptive and expressive language capabilities. This is followed by a series of detailed tests designed to assess specific problematic areas. The evaluation may include clinical observations and the administration of standardized or non-standardized tests. The speech evaluation focuses on sound production and the articulatory movements of the oral musculature, while the language evaluation assesses the patient's comprehension of written and verbal expressions, as well as their ability to articulate thoughts effectively. After interpreting the test results, the speech-language pathologist identifies areas of concern and develops a tailored treatment plan to address the identified speech or language disorders.
