1. Indications

The evaluation described by CPT® Code 92506 is indicated for patients who exhibit signs of speech or language disorders. These indications may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Speech Production Issues Patients may have difficulty producing sounds correctly, leading to unclear speech.
• Fluency Problems Individuals may experience stuttering or other disruptions in the flow of speech.
• Resonance Disorders Patients may present with abnormal pitch, volume, or quality of voice.
• Receptive Language Difficulties Individuals may struggle to understand spoken or written language.
• Expressive Language Challenges Patients may have trouble formulating sentences or expressing thoughts clearly.

2. Procedure

The procedure for the evaluation of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing involves several key steps, which are outlined as follows:

• Initial Screening The speech-language pathologist begins with a comprehensive screening of the patient's speech production, as well as their receptive and expressive language abilities. This initial assessment helps to identify areas that may require further evaluation.
• In-Depth Testing Following the screening, the pathologist conducts a series of detailed tests tailored to assess the identified problematic areas. These tests may include both standardized and non-standardized assessments, as well as clinical observations to gather comprehensive data on the patient's abilities.
• Sound Production Assessment The evaluation includes specific tests aimed at assessing the patient's sound production capabilities and the articulatory movements of their oral musculature. This step is crucial for identifying articulation disorders.
• Language Comprehension and Expression Evaluation The pathologist evaluates the patient's ability to understand the meaning and intent of both written and verbal expressions. Additionally, the assessment includes evaluating the patient's capacity to formulate and verbalize their thoughts effectively, which is essential for identifying expressive language disorders.
• Result Interpretation and Treatment Planning After completing the evaluations, the speech-language pathologist interprets the test results to identify problematic areas. Based on these findings, a tailored treatment plan is formulated to address the specific speech or language disorders identified during the evaluation.

3. Post-Procedure

Post-procedure care following the evaluation of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing typically involves the implementation of the treatment plan developed by the speech-language pathologist.
