The CPT® Code 92984 refers to the procedure known as percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty (PTCA) for each additional vessel treated during a single session. This procedure is typically performed when there is a blockage in the coronary arteries, which can lead to reduced blood flow to the heart muscle and potentially result in serious cardiovascular complications. The process begins with the physician preparing the skin over the access artery, which is commonly one of the femoral arteries. A needle is used to puncture the artery, and a sheath is then placed to facilitate access. Following this, a guidewire is inserted and navigated through the aorta into the occluded coronary artery. A specialized catheter equipped with a balloon tip is advanced over the guidewire to the site of the blockage. Once in position, the balloon is inflated, compressing the plaque against the arterial wall to restore blood flow. This inflation may be repeated multiple times to achieve optimal results. After the angioplasty is completed, the catheter is withdrawn, and contrast dye is injected to perform a completion angiography, which confirms that the treated artery remains open and patent. It is important to note that CPT® Code 92984 is used specifically for each additional coronary artery treated, following the initial procedure coded with 92982.
