Audiometric testing of groups

Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 92559 refers to audiometric testing of groups, which involves the use of specialized testing equipment designed to conduct hearing assessments for multiple individuals simultaneously. This procedure encompasses various methods of audiometry, including pure tone air conduction, bone conduction, speech audiometry threshold, and speech recognition testing. In pure tone air conduction testing, patients wear earphones that deliver sounds at varying frequencies, allowing the audiologist to determine the softest sounds each individual can detect across a range of pitches. Bone conduction testing, on the other hand, utilizes a bone oscillator placed on the skull behind the ear to transmit sound vibrations directly to the inner ear, bypassing the outer and middle ear structures. During these tests, patients respond by pressing a button when they hear a tone, indicating whether the sound was perceived in the right or left ear. Additionally, speech audiometry threshold, also known as speech reception threshold, is conducted in a soundproof environment using earphones to ascertain the lowest level of speech that can be understood by the patient at least 50% of the time in each ear. In the speech recognition component, the audiologist articulates words at a comfortable volume, assessing the patient's ability to accurately repeat the spoken words. This may also include testing in the presence of background noise to evaluate the individual's hearing capabilities in challenging auditory environments. The results of these audiometric tests are typically represented graphically in an audiogram for each ear, and a comprehensive written report detailing the specific tests performed and the findings is provided for each participant in the group assessment.
