The CPT® Code 21805 refers to the open treatment of a rib fracture without the use of fixation devices. This procedure involves a surgical approach where the physician makes an incision over the affected rib to gain direct access. The incision is deepened until the rib and any associated fractured segments are clearly visible. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia to ensure the patient is completely unconscious and free from pain during the operation. Once the rib is exposed, the physician carefully realigns the fractured rib and any displaced fragments to restore the normal anatomy. Importantly, this procedure does not involve the use of internal fixation methods, such as plates or screws, to stabilize the rib. After the realignment is completed, the incision is then closed, completing the surgical intervention. It is essential to report code 21805 for each rib that has been fractured and treated in this manner.
