Hemoglobin; by copper sulfate method, non-automated

Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 83026 refers to a laboratory test that measures hemoglobin levels using the copper sulfate method in a non-automated setting. Hemoglobin is a vital protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) that plays a crucial role in transporting oxygen throughout the body. This specific test is primarily utilized to quickly assess whether an individual's hemoglobin concentration is above or below the threshold of 12.5 grams per deciliter (g/dl). The non-automated copper sulfate method is particularly significant in blood donation scenarios, where it serves as a preliminary screening tool to determine donor eligibility. The procedure involves obtaining a small blood sample through a fingerstick, which is then collected in a capillary tube. The blood droplet is subsequently immersed in a copper sulfate solution contained within a clear test tube. The behavior of the blood droplet in the solution provides immediate insight into the hemoglobin level: if the droplet sinks rapidly, it suggests that the hemoglobin concentration is greater than 12.5 g/dl, indicating that the individual is likely eligible to donate blood. Conversely, if the droplet either floats or sinks slowly, this may suggest a hemoglobin level below the acceptable threshold, prompting the need for a more precise and separately reportable test to confirm the individual's hemoglobin status.
