Common Language Description

Sulfhemoglobinemia is a rare hematological condition characterized by the incorporation of sulfur atoms into the hemoglobin molecule, which impairs the red blood cells' ability to effectively bind and transport oxygen throughout the body. This condition is typically associated with an overdose of medications that contain sulfonamides or with occupational exposure to sulfur compounds. The diagnosis of sulfhemoglobinemia involves the quantitative measurement of sulfhemoglobin levels in whole blood, which is performed using a technique known as spectrophotometry. This specific test, identified by CPT® Code 83060, is crucial for assessing the severity of the condition and guiding appropriate clinical management. It is important to note that a blood sample for this test is obtained through a separately reportable venipuncture, ensuring that the procedure is accurately documented and billed. In contrast to CPT® Code 83055, which is used for a qualitative assessment to determine the presence of sulfhemoglobin, CPT® Code 83060 provides a quantitative analysis, offering more detailed information regarding the concentration of sulfhemoglobin in the blood.
