Individual psychotherapy, as described by CPT® Code 90814, refers to a therapeutic process conducted in an office or outpatient setting, where a trained mental health professional engages with a patient for approximately 75 to 80 minutes. This form of psychotherapy is characterized by its interactive nature, utilizing various tools such as play equipment, physical devices, and language interpreters, as well as other mechanisms of non-verbal communication. The primary aim of this approach is to facilitate effective communication with patients, particularly those who may struggle with expressive verbal and written communication, such as small children or individuals with certain developmental challenges. The use of non-verbal communication methods allows the therapist to connect with the patient in a manner that is more accessible and relatable, thereby enhancing the therapeutic experience and outcomes. It is important to note that if medical evaluation and management services are also provided during the session, CPT® Code 90815 should be used instead.
