Common Language Description

Transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) is a specialized heat treatment technique utilized in ophthalmology, specifically targeting localized lesions of the choroid, such as choroidal neovascularization (CNV). This procedure is performed through a dilated pupil, allowing the delivery of thermal energy directly to the surface of the tumor or lesion. The primary objective of TTT is to induce closure of the abnormal blood vessels associated with CNV, which can lead to vision impairment if left untreated. The procedure employs a wide diode laser beam that is set to a low intensity, ensuring that the surrounding healthy tissue is minimally affected while effectively treating the targeted area. The duration of the treatment is typically around 60 seconds, and it is generally performed with only topical anesthesia, making it a relatively quick and less invasive option for patients. This method is particularly beneficial for patients who may not be suitable candidates for more invasive surgical interventions.
