Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 0126T refers to a non-invasive diagnostic procedure known as the common carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) study. This study is specifically designed to image the common carotid artery, which is a major blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain, neck, and face. The primary purpose of this procedure is to evaluate the atherosclerotic burden, which refers to the accumulation of fatty deposits, known as plaques, within the arterial walls. Additionally, it serves as a tool for assessing risk factors associated with coronary heart disease, a condition characterized by the narrowing of the coronary arteries due to plaque buildup. During the IMT study, ultrasound technology is utilized to capture detailed images of the intima-media thickness of the common carotid artery. These images are then analyzed using specialized computer software, which helps in documenting the presence and extent of any atherosclerotic plaque present in the vessel. An increase in the thickness of the intima-media is clinically significant, as it may indicate generalized atherosclerosis, which can include conditions such as coronary artery disease. This procedure is crucial for early detection and risk stratification in patients who may be at risk for cardiovascular events.
