Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 0199T refers to the physiologic recording of tremor utilizing advanced technology such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. This procedure is specifically designed to measure the frequency and amplitude of tremors, which are involuntary muscle movements that can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. The most prevalent type of tremor assessed through this method is essential tremor, characterized by rhythmic, oscillatory movements primarily affecting the hands, although it can also involve other body parts such as the head, voice, tongue, legs, and trunk. During the procedure, a device equipped with these sensors is affixed to the patient's arm, wrist, or finger, allowing for precise measurement of tremor characteristics. The patient is typically instructed to perform a series of tasks, including resting their hands and raising their arms to touch their nose, which helps in capturing the tremor data accurately. The device communicates wirelessly with a computer system, enabling real-time data collection. Patients may wear the device for an extended duration, during which they can maintain a diary to log medication intake and instances of severe tremors. The collected data is subsequently analyzed by a physician, who interprets the results and generates a comprehensive report detailing the findings.
