Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 0401T refers to a multi-spectral digital skin lesion analysis specifically designed for the evaluation of clinically atypical cutaneous pigmented lesions. This non-invasive procedure utilizes a handheld scanner that emits a range of light wavelengths, from visible light to near-infrared. The emitted light penetrates the skin lesion to a depth of up to 2.5 millimeters, allowing for an in-depth examination of the cellular structure beneath the skin's surface. The data collected during this scanning process is processed by specialized computer software, which analyzes the information and organizes it into an algorithmic format. Each lesion is then assigned an algorithmic score that ranges from less than 0, indicating a negative or low suspicion of morphological disorganization, to 0 or more, which signifies a positive or high degree of morphological disorganization. This scoring system aids healthcare providers in determining the nature of the lesions. Lesions that receive a positive score are recommended for further histological examination, such as a biopsy, while those with a negative score can be monitored over time for any changes. The application of multi-spectral digital skin lesion analysis is particularly beneficial for healthcare professionals in classifying ambiguous skin lesions, detecting early melanomas, identifying high-risk melanocytic atypia, and recognizing other suspicious pigmented lesions. It is important to note that CPT® Code 0401T is specifically for the analysis of six or more lesions, distinguishing it from CPT® Code 0400T, which covers the analysis of one to five lesions.
