carotid sinus (separate procedure)

Common Language Description

The carotid sinus is a specialized anatomical structure located at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery into the internal and external carotid arteries. This area is slightly enlarged and contains baroreceptors, which are sensory nerve endings that play a crucial role in the regulation of blood pressure. These baroreceptors detect changes in the stretch of the arterial wall, which corresponds to fluctuations in blood pressure. When blood pressure rises, the baroreceptors are activated, leading to a series of physiological responses aimed at lowering blood pressure. These responses include vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels, and a decrease in heart rate. However, in certain individuals, this reflex can become overly sensitive, resulting in exaggerated responses to minor stimuli, such as gentle pressure on the neck from turning the head or wearing a tight collar. This hypersensitivity can lead to a rapid drop in blood pressure, causing symptoms such as dizziness and fainting. To mitigate this excessive reaction, a procedure involving the injection of a local anesthetic into the carotid sinus may be performed. This procedure aims to desensitize the baroreceptors, thereby preventing the adverse effects associated with their overactivity. Prior to the injection, the skin over the common carotid artery is prepared to ensure a sterile environment, and careful techniques are employed to accurately position the needle for the anesthetic administration while monitoring the patient for any immediate effects.
