Eustachian tube inflation, transnasal; with catheterization

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 69400 involves the inflation of the Eustachian tube through a transnasal approach, which may or may not include catheterization. The Eustachian tube is a crucial anatomical structure that connects the middle ear to the nasopharynx, playing a vital role in equalizing air pressure in the middle ear and facilitating the drainage of mucus. When functioning properly, the Eustachian tube opens during swallowing, allowing air to enter the middle ear and preventing the accumulation of negative pressure that can lead to tympanic membrane retraction. However, when the Eustachian tube becomes obstructed, it can trap air in the middle ear, leading to a condition known as Eustachian tube dysfunction. This dysfunction can result in fluid buildup in the middle ear, potentially causing hearing loss and other complications. In the context of CPT® Code 69400, the procedure is performed without catheterization, utilizing a nasal tube connected to a balloon. The patient is instructed to close one nostril while exhaling through the other, which inflates the balloon and facilitates the opening of the Eustachian tube, often resulting in an audible popping sound in the affected ear. This method is a non-invasive approach to relieve pressure and restore normal function to the Eustachian tube. The procedure is essential for patients experiencing chronic blockage and associated symptoms, providing a therapeutic option to alleviate discomfort and improve auditory function.
