Percutaneous implantation of neurostimulator electrodes; autonomic nerve

Common Language Description

The procedure described by CPT® Code 64560 involves the percutaneous implantation of neurostimulator electrodes targeting autonomic nerves. This technique is utilized to modulate nerve activity through electrical stimulation, which can be beneficial for various medical conditions. The procedure begins with the preparation of the insertion site, ensuring that it is clean and suitable for intervention. Anatomical landmarks are identified to guide the placement of the electrodes accurately. In some cases, ultrasound guidance may be employed to enhance the precision of electrode placement, ensuring that the electrodes are positioned optimally in relation to the autonomic nerve being targeted. During the procedure, an electrically insulated needle is carefully inserted into the skin and advanced parallel to the autonomic nerve. This approach minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding tissues. Once the needle is in place, a power source is connected, allowing for electrical stimulation to be applied. The physician evaluates the patient's responses as the needle's position is adjusted, aiming to achieve the desired therapeutic effect. After confirming the optimal placement through patient feedback, the needle is disconnected from the power source. Subsequently, an electrode is introduced through the needle's lumen and positioned adjacent to the autonomic nerve. Finally, the needle is removed, leaving the electrode in place, which is then connected to an external generator or receiver to facilitate ongoing stimulation. This procedure is critical for patients requiring neuromodulation therapy for various autonomic dysfunctions.
